Bear Island Paper Company

Summary
Resource prepared the Master Site Plan for Bear Island Paper Company's newsprint manufacturing plant located on a 550-acre site in Ashland, Virginia. Process buildings and warehouse total 86,680 square feet of space and are situated on an 8-acre portion of the site.

Master Site Plan
Resource provided engineering and surveying services for layout, grading, drainage, storm water management, utilities design, a traveling crane rail foundation, and fire suppression piping design for process buildings and a warehouse. The storm sewer, fire piping and site design are sufficient for future expansions of up to an additional 153,580 square feet of space.

Storm Water Management
Hydrological calculations were performed to determine the peak runoff from the site in both its existing and developed condition. Storm water routing calculations were performed, and a single basin was designed to serve as the temporary sediment basin and the permanent detention basin. Silt fencing, curb and drop inlet protection, diversion dikes, culvert inlet and outlet protection, and permanent seeding were located to prevent off-site migration of sediment.

Environmental Services
As part of the site plan approval process, jurisdictional wetlands and Chesapeake Bay Preservation Areas were delineated and mapped. Long term groundwater level monitoring was conducted to define hydrology patterns in marginal wetland areas. Resource coordinated with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding several nationwide permits and the reclassification of marginal areas.

Land Surveying
Resource provided surveying services and field reconnaissance to establish existing site conditions.
